Wimpy Kid Reading Contest

German Heritage of Kansas

Russell Public Library will host The German Heritage of Kansas, a presentation and discussion by William D. Keel on June 3rd at 6:30 pm at 126 E. Wisconsin, Russell, KS. All are invited to attend the free program. Contact the Russell Public Library at (785) 483-2742 for more information. The program in made possible by the Kansas Humanities Council.

More that a third of Kansas residents are of German ancestry. Keel's presentation explores the major German immigrant groups and their impact on Kansas agriculture, education, and Midwestern culture.

William D. Keel is professor of German and chair of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Kansas. His research interest is German settlement dialects in Kansas and he is the editor of the Yearbook of German-American Studies.

Celebrate Black History Month in February

The Russell Public Library will host The Story of Nicodemus, a presentation and discussion by Angela O. Bates on February 10 at 6:30 pm at the library. Members of the community are invited to attend the free program. Contact the library at 483-2742 for more information. This program is made possible by the Kansas Humanities Council.

Angela O. Bates, a Nicodemus descendant and historian, is the executive director and founder of the Nicodemus Historical Society. Working with the Nicodemus community, the National Park Service, and Senators Dole and Roberts, she helped designate Nicodemus as a National Historic Site. Angela presents educational programs to cultural organizations across the nation on the history of Nicodemus, Exodusters and black towns in the West, Buffalo Soldiers, and black women in the West. She is currently completing her second in a series of children books entitled, Adventures of Nicodemus Annie, focusing on the history of Nicodemus. She joined the KHC Speakers Bureau in 2010.

Thank you to Joy Jillson who provided the money for the renovation in memory of her mother Leta Phinney who served as librarian here from 1951-1957.

Painting has begun! The children's side of the library will be closed this week so Marsha and Julie can finish the painting. The whole library will be closed the week of November 1-7 so the carpeting can be laid. We will reopen November 8.

The results collected will be added to those of other libraries across Kansas to show how libraries provide valuable services every day to Kansas citizens. How to Get a Library Card

Kansas residents may register by completing an application, providing name, place of residence, telephone number, their place of employment and birth date if under the age of eighteen. The applicant mus show proof of residence with a current bill or bank statement. These include utility bill, telephone or cell phone bill, credit card bill, mortgage bill, or rent receipt. The patron will then receive their new library card and a copy of the library rules.

If the applicant is unable to furnish any of the above documents the library staff will mail a letter to the new patron at the address listed on the application stating their library card is ready and as a new patron they have a probationary status for a two-month period with limited checkout. The new borrower will be asked to bring the litter with them to the library to pick up their library card, thus verifying the address they provided.. Children may have their own card when they are three years old. Prior to this, materials must be checked out under a parent's card.

Checkout Period

Newspapers and magazines--other than current ones--may be checked out for one week.

All other materials may be checked out for two weeks with one week's grace period.

The library will charge $.25 per day for overdue materials, not including Sundays and holidays, for both adults and children. Fines will begin accruing at the end of a week's grace period. The maximum total fine on any one item is $5.00.

Loss of Borrowing Privileges

In an effort to curtail material losses, any patron who has accumulated fines amounting to $5.00 will lose his borrowing privileges until two conditions have been met: 1)the return of the overdue item(s) or the payment of replacement costs and processing fees have been made and 2( the total fine has been paid in full.

Charges for Lost or Damaged Materials

All library patrons will be responsible for the books they have in their possession. Patrons will be charged for negligent damage to library materials. If the item(s) is lost or damaged beyond repair, the charge will be the cost of the materials as recorded in the automation system, plus a processing fee of %5.00. If no cost is listed, the replacement price will be $10.00, plus the $5.00 processing fee.

The library upholds Kansas Statutes Annotated 21-3702 which states, "failure to return library materials within thirty days following the overdue notice will constitute intent to deprive the library of public property and constitute grounds for prosecution for misdemeanor theft."

When we made room for the Young Adult section we moved all our Kansas materials into the meeting room. So if you're doing family genealogy all the materials you need will be right at your fingertips. We've also added a computer to do online genealogy research. We have Heritage Quest on the computer to aid your search. We still have Russell County newspapers and censuses on microfilm as far back as 1874. If you're just getting started let us know. We'll be happy to help you!

New Kansas Room and Young Adult Section

If you've been to the library lately you've likely noticed a lot of empty bookshelves! We've moved our Kansas collection into the meeting room which will also serve as a Kansas room. The purpose is to make genealogy research easier and more accessible.

The empty shelves in the main library will house all of the Young Adult books.

We are excited about the changes and hope you are, too. If you have any suggestions or questions please feel free to call or stop by the library to check it out!

We started off the first day of our Summer Library Program--Be Creative @ Your Library with a bang! Utica native--Dustin Johnson--entertains kids and adults alike with his mastery of the bagpipes. Dustin is a 21 year old college student and has been playing the bagpipes for about two years. Children learned the different parts of his costume and got to see how the bagpipes work. It was loud but it was fun!

Russell County Area Community Foundation Grant

The Russell Public Library would like to thank the Russell County Area Community Foundation for the grant that supplied the library with money to enhance our Summer Reading Program. The $450.00 grant was used to purchase supplies used during the program, prizes as reading incentives and books centered around insects which was the theme of the program.
